Psalm 62:5-7 I wait quietly before GOD, for my hope is in HIM. HE alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor come from GOD alone. HE is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.
I love the Psalms. No other book in the Bible has been read and reread by me more. I think I love it so much because I see this book as my emotional “stabilizer:” The words written help me gain GOD's perspective on events in my life and get my roller-coaster emotions in proper alignment with the HOLY SPIRIT. I come away from reading the Psalms...calm, quiet, trusting in the LORD, properly angry over GOD things, rejoicing in HIM, crying out to HIM in my pain, depending on HIM for my rescues, praising HIM for HIS tender mercies, feeling HIS great love for me.....The Psalms are good in every situation. Feel like rejoicing? Read the Psalms! Scared? Read the Psalms! Angry over something? Read the Psalms! Overwhelmed with sadness? Read the Psalms! Can't sleep? Read the Psalms! Filled with anxiety? Read the Psalms! The words of David (and others) pour over us like sweet healing oil, comforting us in our lows, rejoicing with us in the highs, and encouraging us in the tough spots. If I were to type in my favorite Psalms for you, you would be reading for quite a while (most of the Psalms in my Bible are highlighted and underlined!). Here are some (very few!!!!) of my favorites (I'm starting at the beginning):
Psalm 1:1-3 Oh the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with scoffers. But they delight in doing everything the LORD wants; day and night they think about HIS law. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail. Their leaves never wither, and in all they do, they prosper.
Psalm 1:6 For the LORD watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
Psalm 2:11-12 Serve the LORD with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling. Submit to GOD's royal SON, or HE will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of your pursuits—for HIS anger can flare up in an instant. But what joy for all who find protection in HIM!
Psalm 3:3 But YOU, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head high.
Psalm 3:5 I lay down and slept. I woke up in safety, for the LORD was watching over me.
Psalm 3:8 Victory comes from YOU, O LORD. May YOUR blessings rest on YOUR people.
Psalm 4:1: Answer me when I call, O GOD who declares me innocent. Take away my distress. Have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
Psalm 4:3 You can be sure of this: The LORD has set apart the godly for HIMSELF. The LORD will answer when I call to HIM.
Psalm 4:4 Don't sin by letting anger gain control over you. Think about it overnight and remain silent.
Psalm 4:5 Offer proper sacrifices, and trust in the LORD.
Psalm 4:7 YOU have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and wine.
Psalm 4:8 I will lie down in peace and sleep, for YOU alone, O LORD, will keep me safe.
Psalm 5:2 Listen to my cry for help, my KING and my GOD, for I will never pray to anyone but YOU.
Psalm 5:3 Listen to my voice in the morning, LORD. Each morning I bring my requests to YOU and wait expectantly.
Psalm 5:7 Because of YOUR unfailing love, I can enter YOUR house; with deepest awe I will worship at YOUR Temple.
Psalm 5:8 Lead me in the right path, O LORD, or my enemies will conquer me. Tell me clearly what to do and show me which way to turn.
Psalm 5:11 But let all who take refuge in YOU rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Protect them, so all who love YOUR name may be filled with joy.
Psalm 5:12 For YOU bless the godly, O LORD, surrounding them with YOUR shield of love.
Psalm 6:1 O LORD, do not rebuke me in YOUR anger or discipline me in YOUR rage.
Psalm 6:2 Have compassion on me, LORD, for I am weak. Heal me, LORD, for my body is in agony.
Psalm 6:3 I am sick at heart. How long, O LORD, until YOU restore me?
Psalm 6:4-5 Return, O LORD, and rescue me. Save me because of YOUR unfailing love. For in death, who remembers YOU? Who can praise YOU from the grave?
Psalm 7:9b For YOU look deep within the mind and heart, O Righteous GOD.
Psalm 7:10 GOD is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right.
Psalm 7:11 GOD is a judge who is perfectly fair. HE is angry with the wicked every day.
Psalm 7:12-13 If a person does not repent, GOD will sharpen HIS sword; HE will bend and string HIS bow. HE will prepare HIS deadly weapons and ignite HIS flaming arrows.
Psalm 7:17 I will thank the LORD because HE is just; I will sing praise to the name of the LORD MOST HIGH.
Psalm 8:2a YOU have taught children and nursing infants to give YOU praise.
Psalm 9:9-10 The LORD is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know YOUR name trust in YOU, for YOU, O LORD, have never abandoned anyone who searches for YOU.
