Daily Devotion for July 17th, 2020

1 Samuel 16:6-7 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the LORD's anointed!” But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn't make decisions the way you do! People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at a person's thoughts and intentions.”

We live in a society where an individual's worth is greatly tied up in their “appearance and height.” Magazines, movies, and TV shows mold our thoughts on what we should look like, what we should wear, and what size we should be. Worse yet, our “looks” can get us “ahead” or “hold us back”....

How sad is that??? How shallow have we become? We often value people based on their “packaging,” their attractiveness, instead of on their “hearts!” That's like getting a present and deeming it valuable based on the wrapping and the ribbon! The more sparkly the “package,” the more apt we are to define it as “good!” But what's on the inside, friends? What is in our hearts??? When we are NOT valuing ourselves and others as GOD does, our society becomes a shallow mess devoid of hope. Our “packaging” will fade, our wrapper will get “torn and wrinkled,” the ribbon will fall off and become frayed, and our corners will become “dented!” You see folks, our “packaging” is just that—packaging! It's meant to protect the “good stuff!” And that good stuff, the stuff that truly matters, the stuff we should be clothing ourselves with and the stuff that gives us value is the way we live our lives for JESUS!

Romans 13:14 “Rather, clothe yourselves with the LORD JESUS CHRIST, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”

Galatians 3:27 “for all of you who were baptized into CHRIST have clothed yourselves with CHRIST.”

Ephesians 4:22-24 “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like GOD in truerighteousness and holiness.”

Colossians 3:12-14 “Therefore, as GOD's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the LORD forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

Today, I urge you to be less concerned about your outward appearance and the outward appearance of others. “Clothe yourselves (instead!) with the armor of right living, as those who live in the light. We should be decent and true in everything we do, so that everyone can approve our behavior” (not our looks!) (Romans 13:12-13). “For the Kingdom of GOD is not a matter of what we eat or drink” (or of what we wear or look like!), but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the HOLY SPIRIT. If you serve CHRIST with this attitude, you will please GOD” (that's who we ought to be trying to impress!!!). “And other people will approve of you, too” (because of the life you are living, because your faith is making you attractive, not your physical appearance!) (Romans 14:17-18). Whatever state your “packaging” may be in, don't let it prevent you from shining like the SON today!!!! AMEN!!!
