Daily Devotion for June 19th, 2020

Matthew 12:48-50 JESUS asked, “Who is MY mother? Who are MY brothers?” Then HE pointed to HIS disciples and said, “These are MY mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of My FATHER in heaven is MY brother and sister and mother!”

JESUS is speaking to the crowd. Imagine yourself being “in” it. Someone pushes through to give HIM the message that HIS mother and brothers are outside—they want to speak with HIM. JESUS then turns to the crowd and asks “Who is MY mother? Who are MY brothers?” HE looks at you: “These are MY mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of My FATHER in heaven is MY brother and sister and mother

GOD'swill” is that we come to HIM through His SON, JESUS CHRIST. JESUS said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the FATHER except through ME” (John 14:6). In our coming to GOD through His SON, we gain JESUS as our “brother!” Moreover, we gain the awesome privilege of addressing our Savior's FATHER as our FATHER...because we've been adopted! So we “don't address anyone here on earth as 'Father,' for only GOD in heaven is your spiritual FATHER” (Matthew 23:9). Moreover, we show our thankfulness for our adoption and demonstrate our love for GOD and His SON through our obedience: “Those who obey MY commandments are the ones who love ME. And because they love ME, My FATHER will love them, and I will love them. And I will reveal myself to each one of them” (John14:21).

This sinless “BROTHER” we have, this wonderful FATHER we have gained, doesn't make sense! It is too wonderful to truly understand! It's crazy, insane, undeserved love for little old you and little old me! Will we ever be able to, in this life, really grasp “how wide, how long, how high, and how deep HIS love” for us really is?? I fear that HIS love “is so great you will never fully understand it” (Ephesians 3:18-19)--not here. How could we? You (and I!), who were once a slave to the ways of the world, “are no longer a slave but GOD's own child! And since you are HIS child, everything HE has belongs to you” (Galatians 4:7)! Are you living this truth in your life? Are you living HIS love out loud, in joyful celebration of HIS saving of (undeserving!) you? The complete awesomeness of this spiritual adoption should cause us to behave “like GOD's very own children, adopted into HIS family—calling HIM 'FATHER, dear FATHER.' For His HOLY SPIRIT speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are GOD's children” (Romans 8:15-16).

Our earthly family members may be a blessing...but our SPIRITUAL family is sooo much better! GOD loved us so much HE sent HIS only SON to reconcile us to HIMSELF! And JESUS, that “only SON,” loved us so much he was willing to die a torturous death to pay for our sins! OUR Heavenly FATHER sent and sacrificed HIS own SON to open the way for our adoption!! And that SON willingly chose to die for us! What a family! What amazing love! Take time to ponder and thank your “DAD” and “BROTHER” for your adoption into THEIR family today!
